What Is a VBA Profession?
A VBA is a Virtual Bankruptcy Assistant who is an independent contractor that assists Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys with their petition preparations and electronically files them with the courts. VBA’s are invaluable to the Attorney who may be just starting out his or her practice or to the Attorney who has a small to medium size practice. VBA’s help Attorneys grow their practice allowing them to devote more time to billable hours. By outsourcing the petition preparation, the Attorney will save time and money by not having the overhead of paying extra staff a salary, benefits, vacation, sick time and taxes. Also, the Attorney will not have to provide the office set up since the VBA works out of his or her own home office and will already have everything he or she needs to work effectively and efficiently. VBA’s are not there to take work away from the Attorney’s staff but to supplement and support it. A diligent and professional VBA has taken the time to be trained, and certified and continues his or her education in the new bankruptcy laws by attending seminars online and being active members of bankruptcy associations. Professional VBA’s only work under the direct supervision of Attorneys, hold high ethical standards and do not practice UPL (unauthorized practice of law). A website is the VBA’s main source for marketing his or her business to Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and many VBA’s can be found advertising their services on Craigslist in the legal section.
